What we do

In our mission to reduce loneliness among deaf indivduals, we have pursued various initiatives.

In our mission to reduce loneliness among deaf indivduals, we have pursued various initiatives. Our main goal is to promote accessibility to resources for both the nonhearing and the hearing. We pride ourselves in being an All-In-One spot for deaf and hard of hearing resources! There are so many amazing organizations that provide help for the community, and we promote a organizations that aid a variety of different needs. This includes ASL learning, support groups, job opportunities, and national organizations that aid the deaf. Another major goal of ours is education. Spreading awareness for the deaf community is extremely important to this organization. We do this by sharing information via our Instagram, @deafempowerment_ , discussing some of the hardships deaf individuals can go through, increasing talk about how to help, and promoting ASL education for all. The last and most important goal, is empowerment. We pride ourselves in making people feel encouraged, seen, and supported. We want to ensure that deaf people never feel alone, and do not define themselves by their disability. One way we love to do this is by sharing stories! We would love if you would share your story with us, whether it be about yourself or someone in your life, every voice is important for education! Contact us via email of Instagram to share your story and increase awareness about the community!

Our Story

Deaf Empowerment was founded by Prabani Singh in early 2024. While she is not not a member of the deaf community herself, the disability has profoundly impacted her life. Singh has openly shared her story: “My uncle has congenital hearing loss, meaning he has been deaf since birth, and I have seen how it has impacted his life. I have lived with him for most of my life, and have seen his struggles in communicating even with his own family. Most of our family hadn’t taken the time to learn sign language, only his younger brother knows ASL. I have seen how he has been neglected and isolated by my own family. While everyone means well and want to support him, accessibility and inclusions is lacking. Most commonly, I notice him experience a phenomenon called ‘dinner table syndrome,’ which describes the feeling of isolation and exclusion that can occur when a deaf or hard of hearing individuals is surrounded by hearing people who are not signing. I can only imagine his situation resembles that of millions of others worldwide, and I want to help. Being a teenager, I have limited resources, but endeavor to assist the best that I can. I started an Instragram page called deafempowerment_, and am spreading information regarding deafness to a variety of people. The goal is to educate people on the disability and spread awareness of the struggles they can face. My hope is people see my page and become more considerate to deaf or hard-of-hearing people in their own lives. I have also created this website, to become a all-around resources for the community. With both resources for disabled individuals themselves and hearing peoples with a desire to learn, I hope one day we can bridge the gap between the hearing and non-hearing.
